About Movement Mujeres

Through investments in the long-term leadership development of women of color and building the organizational muscle necessary to transform power in the Lone Star State Movement Mujeres, a joint project of Jolt and Deeds Not Words,  aims to turn the tide in favor of women of color to protect and expand the rights of women of color on economic, environmental, racial and gender justice.

Movement Mujeres seeks to disrupt the current hierarchies and male-dominated structures in government, policy and the non-profit sector in one of the most populous states in the country- Texas, where the voices, leadership and issues of women of color are excluded and underrepresented in the institutions and policies that most impact their lives.

Movement Mujeres seeks to build the organizational muscle and leadership pipeline necessary to transform Texas and make the state a national leader on policies to protect and expand the rights of working class communities of color, immigrants, the LGBTQ, women and the environment.

Movement Mujeres seeks to bring Texas women of color (African American, Latina, Native American and Asian) together to put forward a multi-issue policy agenda that breaks through sectoral silos that often keep our communities divided. Additionally, we seek to create a culture of cross-movement pollination, that reflects the multiple challenges and opportunities that women of color face today in Texas.

About the Fellowship

At the heart of Movement Mujeres is the fellowship which will create a long-term investment in young women of color leaders, supporting them to hone their skills, build an alumni network they can lean on for long-term support, and place them into key leadership positions in government and social justice nonprofits in Texas. This fellowship will dive deep with 25 women to strengthen their leadership, public speaking, governance and policy capacity.

The fellowship will consist of quarterly two-day gatherings where fellows will participate in intensive trainings and workshops.  Given that the fellowship will require a considerable amount of time, commitment and dedication, all fellows will be awarded a $1,200 yearly stipend. At the culmination of the fellowship fellows will have:

  • learned how to write op-ed pieces and placed them in local and national media

  • advocated on behalf of the Movement Mujeres agenda

  • organized locally on key issues important to them

  • built up their social media brand and messaging

  • participated in inclusive and timely trainings on equity, justice and Texas histories

Considerations for those applying

Given that Movement Mujeres is a statewide program there will be multiple travel requirements. Fellows will be asked to attend quarterly summits and meetings throughout the state for the duration of the two years. These gatherings will alternate between cities with Jolt Offices (Austin, Dallas, Houston) as well as regional gatherings. All travel and lodging will be covered by Movement Mujeres for participants. Childcare stipends will also be provided to any fellow who may have children and have to arrange childcare. Fellows will be expected to participate in at least 75% of the sessions.

If travel is a problem for any reason, please let us know in the comments section of the application.

Movement Mujeres is an innovative program in Texas. As the project grows we anticipate there will be media opportunities for Fellows to share their stories. Fellows will receive training on how to interact with media, tell their story and represent Movement Mujeres.

If applying to Movement Mujeres please be aware the initial gathering for selected fellows will be on February 28th and March 1st in Austin, TX.

Movement Mujeres will host a competitive selection process and special consideration will be given to women who have a commitment to progressive values and a genuine interest in leveraging change in their local communities. Prior experience in organizing is not necessary.

Because Movement Mujeres is looking to revolutionize Texas by building local power this application is open to all women and non-binary folks who identify as a people of color, will invest in the long term work needed to uplift Texas and fall between the ages of 21-35.
